It’s Finished.

Guess what friends? Misha and Marianna are coming!! Thanks to one last generous donation (combined with many, many much appreciated smaller donations of course) we’ve raised the full $5,400. We are SO EXCITED. They arrive on June 26th. I’m still trying to figure out travel plans. Please tell me how to find the cheapest airline tickets ever. I’ve never purchased tickets before. I’m not sure we’ll be able to swing it, I may still end up driving down with Henry if...

A Leap of Faith.

Or in other words: We are crazy. And my husband has apparently joined me on the dark side. You might want to get a snack, because the whole back story here is a little long. I can’t really believe that I’m writing this. You all know how we want to adopt at some point, right? Igor isn’t available for adoption, legally or emotionally. He’s been spending more and more time with his family, leaving the orphanage on weekends. This is hard...

Bring Back Igor…Again!

For awhile the hosting group wasn’t taking deposits for hosting, but the US embassy in Kyiv has put out a statement saying the issuing of visas should continue like normal, therefore: IT’S TIME! Igor is looking forward to spending the summer with us. We have a whole room at our new house just for him. I can’t wait until my boy is in that room sleeping. Our family constantly feels like someone is missing when he’s not here. At least for...

I got scared there would be a dull moment.

Tyler is going on a business trip to Japan for all of June. How exciting for him, right?¬†sigh I was upset about it, even though it’s good for his career. Then the perfect opportunity dropped into my lap! The hosting program I work with to host Igor is starting a small pilot program in Uganda for hosting. (The kids are ADORABLE, but the program isn’t ready to be shared publicly yet so you’ll have to take my word for it.) The...

“The kids at this school are hungry.”

????? ???? ???? ?????? ??? ?????? ???????? The orphanage director explained to a friend who is currently in Ukraine adopting from Igor’s orphanage that due to the conflict going on the government hasn’t been providing enough funding. They don’t have many food staples, medicines, no more toilet paper, or soaps. They only eat watered down soups. My kid is asking me to send him food because he’s hungry. Heart is breaking. Luxury items for them are basic foods and a roll...

Give a Ukrainian Orphan an iPod…

And they’ll share it with all their friends, who will then message you and FaceTime you and beg you to find them a family to love them too. What do you say? What do you tell their hopeful faces on the other side of the screen? How do you answer their questions written while holding their breaths, written with extra question marks for emphasis? I never expected this to happen. I thought we may be able to exchange messages with Igor....

Departure Pictures & Happy Videos.

Some of the later pictures were taken by the chaperone after he went through security. The one with the kids eating McDonald’s at their layover kills me. His face is so sad. My heart is heavy. One of the girls from Igor’s orphanage said this morning that she was having trouble getting the iPod touch we gave him to connect to the internet, but Igor managed to send Tyler an email. All it said was, “I love you.” Hopefully once he...

Departure.

Igor got an antibiotic for his tooth. It was abscessed. The antibiotic started helping by the next morning. The dentist didn’t pull the tooth because it was a baby tooth that was about to fall out anyway. They decided pulling it would be traumatic for Igor at this point. Unfortunately yesterday afternoon when we were packing his things to drive to Indianapolis he kind of freaked out and started rearranging stuff, dumped out everything on the table, and “helped” me by...

Crumbled Tooth.

I spent last night awake with Igor comforting him because he had a toothache. I wish we had taken him to the dentist. We just didn’t have time with the holidays and his stay being so short. I looked in his mouth last night and he has a black crumbling molar. He had a low grade fever and he was in a lot of pain. I feel so bad for him! We watched Russian cartoons and eventually I convinced him to...

Hard.

We’re down to the last few days of Igor’s visit. This is the hardest part. He pushes us away by acting rude on purpose. It’s difficult not to take it personally, but since this is the third time we’ve hosted I’ve gained some wisdom. It’s just his way to make it easier for him to say goodbye. Sad, but true. He alternates pushing us away with being extra clingy. Earlier tonight he was laying in my arms stroking my cheek whispering,...
