Brooklyn 99 Captain Holt 0

The Fire Inspection.

Today was our fire inspection. Yesterday the fire inspector called me and left a voicemail. My first, immediate thought upon playing the voicemail was that I had just missed a call from Captain Holt. Captain Holt is from the TV show Brooklyn 99. Random YouTube Video of Captain Holt: I was kind of nervous/excited to see what this guy was actually like in person today. I was also extremely nervous we weren’t going to do something right and then fail the...

The Mantis. AAAAH!

The reaction people have to insects humors me and baffles me. My kids included! Henry and I are excited when a cool bug shows up. The girls? Horrified. And I don’t know why because we’ve lived in a cabin the woods surrounded by tons of bugs, they’ve grown up with me marveling over insects all the time. Why are they so terrified? It’s definitely not due to lack of exposure or the way they were raised! Rosie says that when she...

House Tour!

This is the final week without Vladik here. I know that no matter how hosting goes or what our relationship with Vladi ends up being, we will never be the same after. Each child we’ve hosted has changed us all as a family. I cannot describe the impact they make on all of us. Our hearts break for them, we love them, we struggle alongside them, we say goodbye to them and send pieces of our hearts back with them. My...

February: The Annual Worst Month Ever

Many nights I spend what feels like the entire night trapped in twisted dreams about my house falling apart, having to move unexpectedly, desperately trying to pack while it’s cold or wet in the house, not having enough money, mean landlords showing up, and feeling unsure where we will live. I have so many of those nightmares I’m afraid to go to sleep sometimes. It’s February. In February 2014 the heat stopped working in the cabin, everything including the toilet bowl...

The Rec Center

I’ve been wanting to sign the kids up for extracurricular activities since we moved here. It’s hard moving to a new place and knowing not a single person, which activities are good, where to go, or anything like that. I found a homeschool co-op that looked great, but it had a waiting list that was for next fall. (Fall 2016) Ok so that’s kind of a no go, and sad because it looked so fun! I found another homeschool co-op that...

Christmas Videos!

Here’s a video of the kids opening their Christmas presents. Igor was so excited when he discovered his Kindle Fire under the tree. So sweet! This is the same video, but not in fast forward. It’s much longer, but you can actually hear what everyone is saying if you want. I have lots of pictures too, but no time to edit them yet. Soon! This was our first Christmas away from family. It was weird. It was so warm out, and...

Ferdinand & The Home Study

This is Ferdinand. He belongs to the farm across the road from our subdivision. The farm is run by the Dominican Sisters of Peace. Yes, nuns. But they are white older ladies who are very much from America, so I’m not clear about the Dominican aspect of it. I started the volunteer application process for the farm this weekend. I’m so excited. They have 160 acres with sheep, the guard llama pictured above, chickens, a turkey, bees, gardens, a greenhouse,...

Monarch Photos

We brought in some monarch eggs we found on milkweed leaves, raised them, hatched them, and had so much fun doing it! And then this happened… I was blown away by the beauty. I had no idea the the green part would turn clear. When I was pregnant I often had these vivid dreams where my stomach would become clear like a window and allow me to look in and see the baby. It turns out Monarchs really do that. Wow....

Metro Parks.

Yesterday was Henry’s 2nd birthday! Pictures of that to come shortly, I haven’t had time to go through all of them yet. During the day yesterday we went to check out a local metro park. Did I mention how impressed I am with the parks here? Hundreds of acres of preserved prairie land and woods WITH CLEAN FLUSHING TOILETS. The parks we’ve visited are so so clean too, and perfectly landscaped with flower beds and such in main areas. This metro...

New Friends!

Rosie is THRILLED. First we met a nice family down the street. They have a 10 year old daughter who is just like Rosie: A little quiet, likes to draw and read, loves Minecraft and Littlest Petshop. Rosie has played with her for hours, every chance they get. I am so happy for her to have finally found a friend her age that likes similar things! Her mom is very nice too. She’s a public school art teacher. Her husband is...
