When Your Husband is Defeated by a Four Pound Cat.

The kids and I left this weekend to come down to Kentucky to stay with my parents for a week. I’m photographing my friend’s birth and her due date was Saturday. So far no baby! This is her third birth. I’ve photographed the other two. Have I ever mentioned how much I love births?? Tyler had to work on Monday and Tuesday (today and tomorrow). He’s planning on coming down on Wednesday. So the way we have our ridiculous kitties set...

Ferdinand & The Home Study

This is Ferdinand. He belongs to the farm across the road from our subdivision. The farm is run by the Dominican Sisters of Peace. Yes, nuns. But they are white older ladies who are very much from America, so I’m not clear about the Dominican aspect of it. I started the volunteer application process for the farm this weekend. I’m so excited. They have 160 acres with sheep, the guard llama pictured above, chickens, a turkey, bees, gardens, a greenhouse,...

Monarch Photos

We brought in some monarch eggs we found on milkweed leaves, raised them, hatched them, and had so much fun doing it! And then this happened… I was blown away by the beauty. I had no idea the the green part would turn clear. When I was pregnant I often had these vivid dreams where my stomach would become clear like a window and allow me to look in and see the baby. It turns out Monarchs really do that. Wow....

And Now For Something Entirely Adorable:

First, apple orchard this weekend! Second, baby guinea pigs! I let them have another litter to replace the one that Igor murdered. I think it’s healing for the girls to have something new and sweet. Shortly after birth: One day old: Two, almost three, days old: Group shot! Four total…FOUR! I think all are boys. From left to right their names are King Xerxes, Lucky the Runt, Uncle Mordecai, and Prince Precious. On the right there is Ada’s guinea pig Prince...

May the fourth be with you.

Today we gave away all of our chickens, and it was sad. I’ve had chickens for years. It will be so strange to not have them any longer, to not begin and end each day with opening and closing their door, to not save scraps for them. I used to spend so much time watching them, just relaxing. The girls cried most of the morning too. While we were loading up the chickens in my friend’s car Rosie and Ada took...

A Visit From Splinter.

For f*cks sake I am never touching anything with milk ever again. I am so miserable. It takes forever to get out of my system. WHY! The charcoal does help the immediate gas bubbles and cramps, but I still feel awful. I’ve still pooped 80234 times in the past two days. I’m relieved to know it’s milk though. I mean it’s obvious, the same thing happens each time I stupidly try to eat it. Two hours after eating it I feel...

Sing to me the song of your people, tornadoes, and other unfortunate messes.

The other night we had scary weather. Tornadoes all around us! One to the west, one to the north, and one to the east. In October. Why? Very weird. The hail was huge. This is a picture of melting hail that I grabbed between tornado warnings. It was actually golf ball to baseball sized when it came down. I’ve never seen such large hail in my life. Some people experienced a lot of hail damage, but luckily we didn’t have anything...

I can’t believe this happened.

My Accidentally-Knocked-Up-Kitty gave birth to her kittens too early yesterday. Too much sad. Way too much sad. There were four of them. She tried to get them to nurse and she kept looking at me like, “Why is this not working?” She was purring so loudly, licking them, cuddling them. Ada kept telling her, “I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry.” Rosie is still holding out hope that there are more kittens hidden inside of her that will be born later,...

Meet Hans and Kristoff. 0

Meet Hans and Kristoff.

I called the property manager and told him how the ashes exploded out from the fireplace. Except I didn’t mention I pulled off the pink foam board…I sort of glossed over that part. Ahem. He said he didn’t mind if we had the chimney professionally cleaned and unblocked as long as we paid for it and didn’t ask the owner to pay. I’m down with that. Exciting! It’s the end of the season, but I will have a functioning fireplace next...

Cheeky Little Bugger. 0

Cheeky Little Bugger.

Yesterday Tyler was in the kitchen buttering a biscuit that I’d just taken out of the oven. I’d gone upstairs to nurse Henry in bed, because Henry prefers to only nurse snuggled under the covers. According to Tyler he saw something out of the corner of his eye and glanced over to see one of the biscuits on the back of the pan lift up and fall back down. The pan was pushed up against the back of the stove, under...
