Awkward Goat Moment. 3

Awkward Goat Moment.

Had an awkward moment this afternoon. We were petting the goats when one of them managed to shove her head through a square in the fence!  It was kind of funny at first, until we realized it was actually completely stuck.  When she tried to pull her head back through the fence her horns would catch and prevent her from getting out of the headlock position. This was when only one horn was through the fence square.  Soon both horns were...

Things and Things. 1

Things and Things.

I am completely overwhelmed by moving and keeping up with daily chores. Moving is going ever so slowly.  It pours rain all day for the one day off Tyler has each week.  Every single week since we’ve had the lease! We can’t seem to get the fencing set up, which means we can’t move out there for good because we can’t leave the animals here alone.  I’m so frustrated! I wish Tyler could just take a week off, but he doesn’t...

RIP Mouse. 0

RIP Mouse.

The mouse was successfully dispatched the following night. Rosie got up in the morning and went in the kitchen.  I heard her scream, “A dead mouse!  Inside our kitchen!” She grabbed my phone and took a picture of it and brought it in bed to show me.  Indeed, it was a dead mouse on the kitchen floor. Ada got up to look at it, screamed and ran back in the bedroom to tell me it had tiny eyes/legs/toes and A REAL...

Spring Tease & The Mouse. 0

Spring Tease & The Mouse.

We have a mouse in our house!  This has never happened before here. It came in the dryer vent hole, stole my collection of saved garden seeds, and made a nice nest behind the dryer in the corner.  I saw no signs of it and had no idea it was there until our dryer broke and we got it repaired the other day.  When we pulled out the dryer, there was the evidence! I wondered why my cats had taken to...

The Demise of Benny Duck. 0

The Demise of Benny Duck.

We had a tragedy over here the other night. Benny was fine when I went out in the snow and wind to put the roosters up for the night.  (I put the roosters in a dog crate covered with a thick rubber backed rug in the garage to block their crows in the morning for the neighbors.  It works very well.) Benny got injured while we were at the beach back in October.  He got a random string wrapped around his...

Possums, Co-op, and Photos. 0

Possums, Co-op, and Photos.

I need some kind of possum repellant spray. These ugly beasts (or Tools of Satan as we jokingly call them) are terrorizing my backyard!  They have ripped the heads off of a few hens over the past few years, and they love to steal eggs.  This past summer they ate an entire nest of duck eggs that were close to hatching.  Poor Mama Duck was panting and paralyzed with fear in the corner next to her nest under the chicken coop....

Holden Beach: Day 2–Happy travels tiny sea turtle! 1

Holden Beach: Day 2–Happy travels tiny sea turtle!

The day dawned gray, cool, and depressing for beach weather. The weather forecast said sunny in the afternoon, but the sun never appeared.  The girls wanted to go to the beach anyway, so first thing this morning we headed down there. Good thing we did because overnight the baby sea turtles hatched!  There were still a few stragglers coming out of their shells in the dunes and crawling slowly down the beach to the ocean as the tide was going out....

More Duckling Updates & Ada Pictures. 2

More Duckling Updates & Ada Pictures.

Oh my gosh we are sick yet AGAIN. I’m so fed up with this.  We’ve been sick over and over for months.  We’ll be better for a week, two at most, before coming down with the next illness.  Tyler and I both get sick every time too no matter how hard we try to wash our hands and not catch it. This time it’s another cold.  Super sore throat, stuffy nose.  I still wasn’t fully well from the last illness either. We take...

Quick Duckling Update! 0

Quick Duckling Update!

To answer a few questions about the ducklings: They eat chicken feed with some water put on it to make it mushy. They can’t crunch very well.  They can eat chicken feed as long as it isn’t medicated chicken feed.  The medicated kind poisons them!  They also like scratch grains (like a seed mix) ground up into powder, which in the poultry world is called mash. I have a cheap coffee grinder that grinds a cup of beans and I use it...

The Birthday Ducklings Reincarnated. 2

The Birthday Ducklings Reincarnated.

I have to interrupt my regularly scheduled homeschooling post to share pictures! I don’t think I ever updated about The Birthday Ducklings.  They were all murdered by their father, Benny Duck.  He broke their necks one afternoon and I found them all three floating in their little pool.  I’d seen him chasing them the day before and thought about separating them, but I never dreamed he would actually kill them.  Apparently male ducks sometimes murder their offspring, who knew? It was incredibly sad. BUT…they are...
