I spent last night awake with Igor comforting him because he had a toothache.
I wish we had taken him to the dentist. We just didn’t have time with the holidays and his stay being so short.
I looked in his mouth last night and he has a black crumbling molar. He had a low grade fever and he was in a lot of pain. I feel so bad for him!
We watched Russian cartoons and eventually I convinced him to swallow Ibuprofen. He kept crying and crying. Breaks my heart!
Today is Saturday, which means all dentist offices are closed. I spent all morning calling every dentist I could find in our area. Finally a friend recommended her friend who does international dental mission work. I left him a voicemail and he called me right back. Tyler took Igor to see him.
We had to lie to Igor and say that it was just a friend’s house because Igor was panicking at the thought of going to a dentist. This dentist has his office in an old house in a small town 1.5 hours away, and he said he would be wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Hopefully that will make it less scary for Igor.
Dental care in Ukraine at the orphanage isn’t very pleasant. No compassion. They pull a tooth with old tools and have the kids spit in a bucket. That’s it. Of course my poor little boy is horrified at the thought of that happening!
The dentist said on the phone he didn’t know what all he could do since the tooth is probably infected. We wouldn’t have time to give antibiotics and wait for the infection to go down before pulling the tooth, and it’s dangerous to pull the tooth with a raging infection because it releases the infection in the body. At least the dentist can take a look at it and see if it’s a baby or an adult tooth and do anything he can, even if it’s just prescribing antibiotics to stop the infection until the scary Ukrainian dentist pulls the tooth.
I’m super nervous about how this dentist visit is going to go. I haven’t heard anything from Tyler yet. I sent Tyler alone with him because Igor adores Tyler and will do anything he says. He thinks Tyler is the coolest human being on the face of the planet earth. He also loves Tyler’s car, so he was happy to get dressed and head out the door to the “friend”.
Tomorrow is the last full day we have with him. Trying not to cry.
