Activated Charcoal for Indigestion.
Activated charcoal is my new favorite thing ever.
I’ve just used it once, so scientifically I can’t say for sure it wasn’t a fluke, but…
I still had gas and cramps yesterday from stupidly eating milk on Monday. It was like my belly just could not recover. Very annoying and uncomfortable, not to mention stinky farts are no good when living around other human beings. (Thank goodness I have three dogs I could blame it on…)
The activated charcoal came in the mail from Amazon. With a tiny bit of trepidation I took two, as recommended on the bottle. They didn’t taste or smell like anything.
I hate capsules that have smell/taste! I have trouble swallowing pills, and when the odor makes me want to gag then they really won’t go down. My PrescriptAssist probiotics are like that–they smell gross and the smell floods your mouth when the water hits the pill. Gross.
Anyway, down the hatch the charcoal went. And I waited…
Within about an hour I felt nothing.
By nothing I mean my intestines stopped feeling like they were over inflated and I had nary a fart to escape.
It was just GONE.
Now, to be overly graphic, I have not had anything exit my body yet so I can’t say how it will affect things of that nature. I’ve read it makes your poo black. I’ve also read it can cause constipation. Who knows what it will do to my screwy system, but I don’t really care because it stopped the horrible cramps and gas and that’s all that really matters to me.
I am very excited that it worked so effectively. I’ve gotten rid of the giardia. I’m pinning down my food allergies/sensitivities. Now I’ve found something to help the misery when I eat something I shouldn’t have by mistake or when I cave to temptation. (Just one little bite won’t hurt right? Wrong, you idiot.)
Activated charcoal seems totally harmless from my brief google research. Unless there’s something glaring I am missing? No side effects, easy relief, cheap. YES!
From the one dose I took, I would put activated charcoal in the HIGHLY RECOMMEND category for natural remedies to keep on hand. I’ve heard tale that it works great during stomach bugs too, both once you catch one and get sick and also preventing you from catching it from your kids.
I bought this kind from Amazon.
Next I want to try using it for teeth whitening. My pointy canine teeth are yellowed no matter how much I brush them well. I don’t know why! I don’t drink coffee or tea, and I don’t smoke. I brush 1-2 times a day! I’ve heard brushing with activated charcoal lifts stains and plaque from your teeth and that the charcoal has no taste.
I did read on comment on a blog entry saying that a dentist said it can weaken enamel. I’m not sure if that’s true or not. I’m thinking perhaps I’ll try brushing with it maybe once or twice a week for a short period of time to see if it gets my teeth whiter, then not use it on a regular basis after that. Surely using it for a short period of time couldn’t do major enamel damage. I’ll let you all know the whitening results if you’re curious!
