GPALOVEMATH: An Online Math Program Review.
For the past six weeks the girls and I have been using a math program called GPALOVEMATH. Math is a difficult subject for my 8.5 year old. She’s great at reading and writing, but struggles with math. We were offered this fully online math program to review and I thought, why not? I’m constantly in search of a type of math program that will “click” with her brain and suddenly make math interesting for her.
The math program has animated characters called learning coaches that guide you through each lesson. Every grade level has a different guiding character. Rosie is working on 3rd grade math, which is guided by a robot.
The robot has a sort of Stephen Hawking voice, which I personally think should inspire brilliance, but my daughter said it sounded weird. In any case, she has actually enjoyed these math lessons and they hold her attention! If something is too easy it’s simple to skip ahead to the quiz.
Ada’s kindergarten math is guided by the detective.
The lessons are very drawn out, over-explaining every detail. To some kids this might be tedious, but to my math challenged 3rd grader this was a welcome detail of the program!
The lessons go in this order:
There are three types of lessons to choose from every day. The lessons unlock as your child is ready to start them.
My kids could do the lessons by themselves! I did sit with Ada on the kindergarten lessons, but that was more for the safety of my laptop than to help her navigate the program. ;) The sentences can be clicked on to hear them read out loud for kids who aren’t reading well just yet. We used GPALEARN with a Macbook Pro using the Chrome browser and it worked great, no issues other than having it freeze up a couple of times. (Just a warning: This program is not currently compatible with Kindle Fire!)
After each lesson is completed the parent gets an email letting them know how their child did. Rosie was not pleased when I showed her the email saying she needed to try a lesson again. Haha!
Each grade level consists of 150 lessons and over 10,000 math problems. If your child does 4 to 5 lessons per week then your child will complete the grade in 10 months.
Great Parents Academy has definitely benefitted our homeschool. If you have a reluctant math student I would definitely recommend trying it out! They offer a free trial so you can see if your kid likes it before purchasing.
To purchase GPALOVEMATH it’s $149 for the year, or $12.99/mo per child. This will give you access to all levels! You can get it for a limited time for $129 with code GPAINTRO15. (Yay for coupon codes!)
