Old House Woes.
I’m having so much trouble getting anything accomplished as far as packing, or even routine household chores go.
Henry, give mama a break here!!
Tyler is still really liking the new job, which is good. He will be home this weekend, but he has to leave again on Sunday night to go back up there.
We got the radon report back on our new house and the level was 10. The highest “safe” level is 4, so we’re asking them to install a radon mitigation system. Apparently radon is really common up there.
I hope they say yes to installing it, because if they don’t we still need to move and I will have to use my new floor budget for the radon. That would suck!
We also asked the sellers to make a few other small repairs from the home inspection report, like missing shingles. We didn’t bother asking them to repair all the little insignificant things, only stuff that would cause issues like a leaking roof down the line. We haven’t heard back from them yet. They have until the 10th.
I’m eager to get everything packed, but we still have about a month of living here so I can’t pack every little thing. I just need like three days totally alone without kids and I think I could be in good shape. Unfortunately that will never happen.
Yesterday I went to the property manager’s office and presented him with a two page bulleted list of every single issue this poor old house has. It was mainly for his benefit, not mine at this point. He needs to know that this house is sort of falling apart around our ears and he can’t just stick a For Rent sign out in the yard.
I also told him how the contractor hasn’t been keeping up with his end of the deal. We’re on day 74 without a kitchen!!!
And the leaking gutters that are soaking the walls? Still not even touched, it’s getting much worse.
The back room downstairs is the worst. Our bedroom is also bad, and there is now something gross on the wall. I’m not sure if it’s some kind of tan and white mold or just the plaster bubbling up through the paint. Whatever it is, it looks gross and there’s a lot of it all down the wall next to the leaking window by my bed.
What do you all think this is? It’s only on the rough spots of the wall, which is weird.
(I just snapped these pictures with my phone. My galleries automatically watermark everything…)
Am I sleeping next to some kind of creepy tan and white mold, or is this just from damp plaster? I didn’t tell the property manager about this because I just noticed it. It wasn’t there a few days ago, I swear!
The walls are plaster, maybe with painted over wallpaper. There are no other spots like this anywhere else on the walls in this room or in the house. This just appeared recently. It’s all up and down the all along the leaky window frame.
The leak comes from the wood in the top of the window, from inside the wall above. It’s rainwater, not a pipe.
This is where the tan/white stuff is on the wall, just to the right of this leaking window frame all up and down along the side of the window. You can see where the leak has destroyed the window sill.
It doesn’t show up well in this cell phone picture, but you can sort of see the water stains on my white curtains. Look at the top in the very center. The curtains get wet every time it rains and the water goes all the way down the curtains to the bottom.
Looking forward to my new house, that I own, where I have the authority to fix little problems before they turn into huge miserable disasters! And where I have the ability to fire contractors that don’t do their job in a timely manner!
Being completely powerless is what I absolutely hate about renting. I guess I’m just not the type of person who can sit back and wait for someone else to deal with things. I want to do it myself, and do it right, with attention to detail.
