CTC Math: A Review!
When you first look at a grade in the program you’re given the option to take diagnostic tests based on subject. This is awesome–it was so easy to figure out which areas Rosie needed to review further! We could then go to the curriculum for that grade and find the lessons for the things she missed in the diagnostic tests.
Each lesson in the 3rd grade section we reviewed started with a short and simple video. The teacher has a cool Australian accent, which Rosie liked quite a bit. The lessons each focus on one specific topic. The video shows a sample and explains things with a visual and with words. (Rosie is a very visual learner, just like me!)
After the video students are presented with questions to answer. I was surprised to see that Rosie quickly grasped the concepts with these lessons! She struggles so much with math that I volunteer to review every math program we are offered, hoping to find the perfect one. We also reviewed a different online math program a few months ago. I was curious to see how this one compared, and which Rosie enjoyed more. This program is so simple and is explained more clearly in a way Rosie can understand. I was pleased with it! CTC Math is definitely a top contender for our main program this coming fall.
For the 3rd grade lessons CTC gives the student the option to see a visual summary of the lesson. They’re designed to be printed out. There are also speed drills and students can choose which math subjects to include in the drill.
Parents are emailed a summary of their child’s progress on a weekly basis. Very handy for those of us who need to print records for the state. We just moved to Ohio, where we have to do quite a bit more record keeping than we did back in Kentucky. I’m nervous!
One teeny tiny confession: CTC Math is also great for the parent who needs a bit of a refresher course. Make yourself one of the students and complete some of the grade levels. It’s a weird combination of terrifying (math class flashbacks, my most dreaded class!) and fun to review math without the pressure of grades or being embarrassed in front of peers for not quickly understanding the subject matter.
CTC Math would also make a great review program to use over the summer months to keep math skills sharp. The lessons only take about fifteen minutes each.
In summary we liked this program. It’s clean, simple, visual, and effective!
