Here to Help Learning: A Writing Program Review!
For the past few weeks we’ve been working on language arts with a program called Here to Help Learning.
The program is entirely online and consists of streaming videos and print-outs. It’s for multiple ages–there are three different Flight paths to choose from, and you can choose to do paragraph writing for younger children or essay writing for older children.
Paragraph writing is intended for grades 1-3. Essay writing is intended for grades 4-6.
Rosie is doing paragraph writing because I wanted to be sure she grasped the basics before moving on.
Here to Help Learning has a chart on their site detailing which projects will be completed depending on what path you choose if you’re curious to see what all there is to learn with this program.
There’s also an excellent FAQ on their website if you want to know more!
So what do you need to know about Here to Help Learning?
It’s FUN! It’s engaging! Each week has a video and a writing assignment, which spans two days of lessons. For kids who don’t love to write only doing it two days a week makes things easier. The videos are very attention grabbing, not boring. All of my kids hear the videos and are immediately drawn to the computer to watch. Even my active two year old boy pays attention!
Ms. Mora is the quirky lady starring in the videos as the teacher. Her sidekick is a cute, floppy basset hound.
The paragraph writing we’re doing is very logical. It’s teaching Rosie how to notice small details and include them in her descriptions. It encourages her imagination and helps her practice observing the world around her.
As part of the videos we’ve been playing the game Sentence, No Sentence where kids have to determine if they and others are saying a sentence or a phrase. This is such a silly and simple game, but very helpful for kids to practice stating full sentences.
Each weekly video includes the following sections:
The subscription cost is very affordable. It’s only $6.99 per month. That gives you access to all the levels of the program, so you only have to pay one fee to use it with all of your kids. They have a handy buyer’s guide on their website!
If you’ve been overwhelmed with other intense writing programs like I have in the past I highly recommend giving this one a try. I’m really glad we were able to review it because I wouldn’t have discovered it otherwise!
Here’s a video of Rosie talking about her story prompt from one of the Take-Off video portions.
