Foster Care Classes, Round 2.
I like the instructor of our foster care licensing classes.
She doesn’t teach every single class, but so far she’s taught three out of four of them. Next week she’s on vacation so we’ll have a different instructor, she said she didn’t know who it would be. Keeps things interesting I guess.
The instructor I like is named J. She has two jobs at the moment in addition to being a social worker for our agency. She teaches a class on sexuality at OSU. Her main job is as a social worker for the children’s hospital. She does intakes on kids who have been physically and sexually abused.
Horrifyingly, extreme abuse in children happens way more often than we hear about on the news. :( She said she’s already had four toddlers die so far this year from being beaten, and three out of four were beaten because of potty accidents. They were ages 2-3.
She also told us she works cases of children who have been rescued from child trafficking on a regular basis, which is a huge problem in Ohio that no one is really talking about, along with multiple children who have been raped in route to America from Mexico as they were smuggled in.
Strangely enough she remains a rather upbeat person. She’s about my age, funny, and animated, and she knows a lot about current research into trauma and behavior. She’s totally someone I would love to have for a friend.
She said to decompress after her emotionally draining work experiences she reads paranormal romance novels and listens to Garth Brooks.
Of course she does. Haha!
Our first class topic today was child development, and the second class was about trauma. Each class is four hours long. It makes for a long day, sitting in the same seat alllll day long in a classroom. It makes me feel drugged and sleepy afterward!
The weather here has been so awful. We woke up to about an inch of snow, had to clear off the car before going to our class, and though the snow melted throughout the day there have been flurries coming down all day long.
It’s April! I’ve never, ever seen snow in April before that I can remember.
Gross. No thank you. NO THANK YOU.
I’m tired of being freezing cold all the time. Where is the warmth?? I’m seriously at a mental breaking point here, and my kids are climbing the walls.
Next week it looks like it’s supposed to be warmer. At least then the poor babysitter can go to the zoo or something and not be trapped in the house with my kids for 9 hours. I feel so bad for her! My kids aren’t badly behaved at all, it’s just so boring for her, I’m sure.
Our first class topic next week is sexual abuse. I’m not looking forward to it.
We only have four Saturdays of classes left! I’m counting down!
We may have to take more to be licensed as a treatment home for medically fragile babies though. I need to ask soon.
