The Fire Inspection.
Today was our fire inspection.
Yesterday the fire inspector called me and left a voicemail. My first, immediate thought upon playing the voicemail was that I had just missed a call from Captain Holt.
Captain Holt is from the TV show Brooklyn 99.
Random YouTube Video of Captain Holt:
I was kind of nervous/excited to see what this guy was actually like in person today.
I was also extremely nervous we weren’t going to do something right and then fail the fire inspection. We even had to have everything in the basement three feet away (in all directions) from the water heater and furnace. It took me forever to rearrange my basement so that it was still functional, but the storage space all around the water heater and HVAC was clear to three freaking feet.
The Fire Inspector arrived to inspect my domicile at 10 o’clock this morning.
He was tall, African American, and middle aged.
HE WAS CAPTAIN HOLT.
I wished Tyler had been home to witness this.
In the TV show it turns out that Captain Holt is actually gay. While I am not making any direct assumptions about Not Actually Captain Holt’s sexuality, I did happen to notice something interesting.
This tall, serious man was wearing two bracelets on one arm. As the sleeve of his fire uniform scooted up when he was signing a form I saw them. One was a woven bracelet in Bob Marley colors. The other was a bracelet made of cowrie shells.
Like the real Captain Holt, there is more beyond the professional and stoic front.
Anyway, we passed the fire inspection and Not Actually Captain Holt was a nice guy. After feeling so nervous, all Not Actually Captain Holt did was come inside, check our fire extinguisher, check for our evacuation route mapped out and hung upstairs and downstairs, check to see if we had working smoke detectors in the proper places, and check to see if the water heater and HVAC were clear of clutter. Then he gave us a log for monthly fire drills, as required by the county, and explained how to fill it out.
The whole thing took about five minutes.
Tomorrow afternoon we have our big home inspection with the social worker. I’m also nervous about this one, but I think it will be ok. I keep going over and over everything in my head trying to imagine if there’s something I may have missed in all of my cleaning and organizing.
I got nothin’.
Tonight I’m going deep clean my bathrooms and maybe mop. The dishes need to get done.
I’ve spent days cleaning all the rooms in the house in preparation for the home inspection. We’d better keep it clean after this!
After tomorrow’s social worker visit we are DONE with the licensing process.
How exciting is that??? I can’t believe we’ve actually made it to this point! We had to do hours of classes, multiple social worker visits, mountains of paperwork, medical appointments, fingerprinting, CPR class…
Now we’re done and the real adventure can begin.
The licensing social worker told me that it should take her about two weeks to go through all of our paperwork and get the homestudy written up, then approved by her supervisor. At that point we’ll be licensed.
That means we’re on track for possibly having a new baby or toddler for Halloween.
