More about Charlotte Mason & my study group.

A few weeks ago I said I was going to write more about our homeschooling style.  I haven’t had time to write much, and truth be told I’m still learning so much about Charlotte Mason that I can’t accurately write up something about it. The basic way Charlotte Mason style homeschooling works is that we use living books instead of text books.  Living books are narrative style books, like an autobiography, that are written by one person and pull your thoughts and...

Behavior Fail. 2

Behavior Fail.

Every year of parenting I learn something new because I run up against another challenge.   Parenting is hard.  I think it’s harder the older kids get.  Five and half, almost six is the most difficult yet.   It’s this age when suddenly there’s no more adorable toddler or preschooler innocence left.  Kids are expected to behave with some maturity.  They should be able to start understanding how to act in different situations.  Being a preschooler is no longer an excuse,...

I have been having so much fun researching my family history. It started with my grandfather when I was in middle school.  I spent an entire summer going to different places, talking to different elderly people, and researching family history.  That was before the ease of the internet. A few months ago I used a free trial from ancestry.com to compare our handwritten notes and research further.  Geeze, the internet really has linked family history together to make it super easy! I discovered one branch of...

The End of Summer. 1

The End of Summer.

Tropical Storm Lee has ushered in lots of rain, clouds, and shockingly cooler weather to our area over the past couple of days. It was 98 degrees and humid then down to 59 degrees and non-stop rain in a matter of hours!  The rain is forecasted to last through tomorrow, then we’ll get low 70’s and sunshine. I can’t wait, we have become addicted to being outside this spring and summer.  My high energy Ada must spend hours outside every day...

Photos of Our Typical Day.

Do you realize the summer is nearly half over now? Soon it’s going to be time for Rosie to start Kindergarten.  We’re homeschooling, so she’s not really going anywhere, but we have to keep an attendance record for the state. I have to send a letter to the board of education stating our intent to homeschool this August!  For real, it will be official.  I will have accepted the responsibility. What a huge responsibility it is!  We’ve been doing schoolish things already–we’re...

I always knew I was a real princess… 5

I always knew I was a real princess…

The love letters between William and Ada have prompted me to peer into that branch of the family tree a bit more. I decided to do the ancestry.com 14 day free trial last night to see if there was any new info on there.  I have some basic info about that part of my family, but not a lot of details. Well, as it turns out I stayed up most of the night finding out all kinds of cool things about...

Success! 1

Success!

After trying to figure out knitting and/or crocheting for several years, I have finally succeeded!  I’m so excited.  I can do it, I can really crochet stuff, not just make semi-formed thingies. So far I’ve made this little dolly, Sleeping Sarah, who still needs a face. Isn’t she cute?  Ada loves to chew on her hat tip. I also made Ada a hat.  I am debating whether to add ear flaps or kitty ears to it. The hook size I need to make the ear flaps...

Bangers a la BANG! 3

Bangers a la BANG!

Rosie had her first ever dentist visit this morning.  It was shockingly uneventful.  I don’t know what I was so nervous about. I’ve been going to the same dentist since I was three years old.  The dentist was excited that I was bringing in my kid, said it made him feel old.  He took a picture on his camera of Rosie and him together.  I’m waiting for him to email it to me.  He’s a nice guy. Rosie was thrilled to get to go...

Fight Back Friday: My Backyard Chickens. 0

Fight Back Friday: My Backyard Chickens.

I get questions from people all the time about keeping chickens in my back yard. My favorite statement comes from my in-laws. “Our eggs come from Kroger’s. Why would we want to waste time and money by growing a garden and taking care of chickens when we could get eggs for $1 a dozen from the grocery?” The answer to that question can be long and in depth, but for simplicities sake I’ll just say I enjoy gardening and tending to...
