No Regrets.

Regardless of their situation in the foster home, my kids are orphans who have been through a lot of heartbreak losing both parents. If I can make them smile, that’s worth something. And I sure can make them smile! Real life. Crumbs on the floor, child in pajamas jumping up and down with messy hair, stubborn Ukrainian asleep accidentally on the couch refusing to remove her dirty clothes or too small shoes. Misha took this picture of Andrii cooking chicken legs...

The Adventure Continues On…

Things are going fine over here. There are lots of pictures on Instagram, if you aren’t already there. If you don’t have the app you can see my account online here. Misha is the sweetest little guy ever! Mariana is loving, but sad. She struggles with control. She won’t eat, causes trouble when the other kids are happily playing, refuses to change clothes. I think it’s because she is anxious to control what little things she can in her unpredictable life. We...

And it’s our God-forsaken right to be loved, love, love, love, love… 0

And it’s our God-forsaken right to be loved, love, love, love, love…

This is intense parenting. Five children who all want me at once, all the time. Five children talking non-stop at me in two different languages, all the time. One child who needs A LOT of redirecting and teaching of proper behavior vs. orphanage crazies. (Biting others, hitting, slapping hard, messing up other people’s things on purpose, throwing, breaking, dumping out food on purpose, etc.) Thank God I did all of that reading and training in preparation. I’ve totally got this. I hope. Plenty...

The Chaperone.

First, let me tell you more about the chaperone: He’s shy, and he said his English is rusty, but he understands most things and I want to adopt him too. He was an expert vomit catcher and cleaner-upper on the horrible drive home. He sat next to my crying baby and played with him for 9 hours in the car. He opens doors for me, helps me clean up the house, and he cooks. He likes to cook. He doesn’t like...

Ah! 0

Ah!

Oh dear. I am quite desperately in love with these children. We had a horrible car trip home. I thought it would never, ever end. Sweet Jesus have mercy. It was about nine hours. NINE. We hit multiple wrecks, road constructions, and traffic jams. WHY? Mariana outright refused to take any motion sickness medication. She threw up many, many times. Finally at one point I pulled out the strawberry flavored dissolving Zofran and she was convinced to eat one after Misha...

They’re Here! 0

They’re Here!

On the way to the airport we were driving in Atlanta traffic (seriously is it always this awful??) when this huge construction truck had it’s tire blow out in front of us. I mean the tire totally obliterated into three million shards of exploding rubber. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. Smoke, bits of rubber, a swerving concrete truck. What the heck? I will not be sorry to leave Atlanta’s highways, I’ll tell you that much. Whew. The...

Today is the Day.

Today is the day. TODAY IS THE DAY! They’re currently in the air from France to Atlanta. I haven’t really slept at all. I finally got up at 4 this morning. Henry and I left around noon yesterday. The drive went way better than I thought it would. (I normally panic on car trips, but thanks to the Zoloft I felt wonderful and it was actually pretty fun! I may have to make road trips more often now instead of avoiding...

Preparations.

Rosie instructed me to photoshop Misha and Marianna into our family photo. This is going on the introduction letter we send for the kids to read at the airport, before they get on the flight to America. Rosie is so excited, she can barely contain herself. Lots of planning, speculation, and general kid-like bouncing off the walls with anticipation! She’s been spending hours learning more Ukrainian words, and she’s just about mastered writing their alphabet. This is a sign she made...

It’s Finished.

Guess what friends? Misha and Marianna are coming!! Thanks to one last generous donation (combined with many, many much appreciated smaller donations of course) we’ve raised the full $5,400. We are SO EXCITED. They arrive on June 26th. I’m still trying to figure out travel plans. Please tell me how to find the cheapest airline tickets ever. I’ve never purchased tickets before. I’m not sure we’ll be able to swing it, I may still end up driving down with Henry if...
